Laws of the
Game
Interested in important nuances of the game and correcting
the myths?
The
No-Call Fouls
“Hey ref, their player
is playing the ball while lying on the ground….” “Call the foul, ref!”
…”Ref, that’s a high kick…why don’t you call
it?”
-
There are no such
fouls as “playing the ball on the ground or high kick.” When
appropriate, these situations are covered by the “dangerous play”
law.
-
A player lying on
the ground is OK playing the ball as long as he/she does not endanger
either themselves or any other player. A “no-call” case for this is when
there is no player in the area surrounding the down
player.
-
A player may high
kick the ball as long as he/she does not endanger either themselves or
any other player. A “no-call” case for this is when the player kicks at
a high ball in front of them while a defender is safely at their back
and not endangered by the
play.
-
As is often the case
in soccer, these potentially “dangerous play” situations are the
judgment of the
referee.
-
Remember that a
referee can only call what they see. If they are watching the play in a
different direction and miss something, they can not just call it
because the sideline coaches or parents are yelling that there was a
foul.
Youth
Referees
We are fortunate to
have young adults that love soccer so much they are willing to volunteer
their time to ref. Please treat these kids as you would your own kids.
Mentor them and guide them. If you have a question about a call, discuss
it with them at half or after the game.
They are learning to
ref as we are learning to coach and our players are learning to play
soccer. They will make mistakes, just like we will.
The idea is to have
fun, make sure everyone is safe & to encourage the self-esteem of
EVERY youth in our
program.

RAINY/SNOW DAY
POLICY
AYSO’s policy is that we play
in the rain unless there is lightening or standing water on the field. If
there is snow on the ground we do not play. If you choose NOT to play a
game, you must first notify the other Coach AND Referee Administrator (
Tim Kendall 479-4948). Make up games are to be rescheduled at a time
convenient to the two teams. We usually reserve the weekend after the last
scheduled games to play region-wide make up games ( if everyone got rained
or snowed out.) You may use this time to play an individual rescheduled
game. For an individual rescheduled game, the coaches will be responsible
for nets and providing referees and/or linesmen.

Thank YOU!
Thank you for
volunteering your time to coach in our program. AYSO is an all-volunteer
organization and you are the backbone of the program. Please take time to
review the AYSO philosophy.
-
Open
Registration –AYSO has sign-ups, not try-outs. As long as there is
space on a team, every child who signs up will play. If all teams in an
age group are full, a waitlist will be kept.
-
Balanced
Teams – Skilled/talented players are evenly distributed among all
teams in an age group to promote balanced competition. We like to keep
kids from the same school together so that they can play with their
friends. This lets new people to our area make new school friends fast.
It also makes it easier to practice when you meet close to home.
However, when we have a small number of kids from one school every year,
it might be necessary to distribute players so that we maintain even
teams across a particular age group. This is done in the interest of
everyone having a positive soccer playing experience.
-
Everyone Plays
– Every player will play at least half of every game. No player
should play 4 quarters in one game unless everyone has played at least 3
quarters. One way to do this, especially with a full roster, is to have
½ the team play 3 quarters one game and ½ the team play two quarters.
For the next game, those that played only 2 qtrs get to play
3.
-
Positive
Coaching – AYSO believes in building soccer skills and self-worth
through encouragement and teaching. Please remember that your words and
actions are affecting everyone at a practice or game. Negative comments
to players, referees or coaches will not be tolerated.
-
Sportsmanship
– It is up to you to set the tone for your team. Be a good role
model during the games and keep in mind most kids remember having fun
and playing – not who won the game.
We are committed to
supporting your coaching experience. Our region website is constantly
updating resources for your use. Please check out these new items:

Safe Haven
Training for all Volunteers
Safe haven is a program to protect the
children and volunteers in AYSO. This is in reference to the Child Abuse,
Prevention and Treatment Act of 1974 and the Volunteer Protection Act of
1997. AYSO was the first youth sports organization to create a
formal program to comply with the Child Protection Act and Volunteer
Protection Act.
What It Means To You
The purpose of the Volunteer
Protection Act of 1997 (VPA) is to provide certain protections to
volunteers in lawsuits based on the activities of volunteers. You must be
trained, certified and act in accordance with a strict job
description.
If you have not
received Safe Haven Training, you may obtain this certification on-line.
Please go to www.ayso151.org. Click
on the “Coaches Corner” link and look for this icon.

child's information directly and helps us to speed up the team formation
and registration process. You are also able to make any
changes that may happen, such as address or phone changes directly to the
system.
This is a very secure system--AYSO is
committed to the protection of its players and worked very hard to ensure
this. We ask that you Pre-Register your child at
www.eayso.org. Once you log into the site, you will be asked
to create a user name and password, then you may register your
children. We still need to have a signed release form, so after the

AYSO
Heading Policy
The AYSO Education Department
and the AYSO Coaching Technical Committee believe that heading is part of
the game of soccer, and it should be introduced and taught properly to
players at the appropriate age and time. AYSO does not recommend
heading below the age of ten.
Correct
Heading Techniques: Keep your eye on the ball. Place your body so
that your forehead will meet the ball. Take a comfortable stance with
knees bent. Keep your eyes open. Keep your mouth closed. Keep your chin
tucked. Keep a rigid neck. Use your arms for balance. Contact the ball
with the forehead. Your legs should propel your body from your waist to
head the ball. Follow through toward the target. Once you head the ball,
put your body back into a position where you can go to the next move.
Basic
Heading Guidelines: Introduce heading at an appropriate age level, age 10
or over. Teach the skill correctly. Never force a player to head the ball.
Limit the number of times a child heads the ball.
